“SAFE HOME CHICAGO” INVITES CHICAGO TV STATIONS TO SPARK

CITYWIDE EFFORT TO CURB CITY CRIME AHEAD OF DNC 2024

City’s TV stations, local civic group says, can profit by helping Chicago curb its crime by August and avert a repeat travesty of the 1968 DNC

Chicago, IL - February 8, 2024 – Chicago Civic Media (CCM) is calling on Chicago’s six major TV stations to profitably spark Safe Home Chicago (SHC), its proposed citywide campaign to mobilize Chicagoans, city police, and City Hall to curb Chicago’s crime in advance of the August 19 opening here of the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

In a memo sent to leaders of the TV stations, CCM asserts that SHC enables Chicago to achieve in just six months what the city has been unable to achieve over the past six decades: turn the corner on its violent crime.

“Sound Impossible?“ asks CCM Director Steve Sewall, a Chicago educator and media entrepreneur. “Think again. SHC is a game. It challenges Chicago to turn the corner on its crime. On deadline.  Everyone can play. And there's your profit angle: everyone. If Chicago decides to play, everyone in Chicago, including its media, either wins or loses this game. And the game is entirely winnable when Chicago's media mobilize Chicagoans to win it.”

Key to Safe Home Chicago is a prime-time TV SAFETY SUMMIT, aired by a lucky TV station. Other city media play the game in ways that work best for their audiences and advertisers.

“After examining, discussing and debating the risks and rewards of SHC during the Safety Summit,” Sewall says, “Chicagoans and their leaders decide (by citywide poll and City Council vote) whether to play the game for real: to commit to measurably curb Chicago's crime by August 19. If Chicago decides to play, it's game on and word spreads like wildfire. Chicagoans, police and City Hall are on track to make Sweet Home Chicago into Safe Home Chicago.”

Sewall adds that “Chicago can’t afford this August for national TV to highlight Chicago's violence. It can’t afford to repeat the violent 1968 Chicago DNC.”
